FC Volendam has terminated the contract of defender Silvinho Esajas with immediate effect. The club announced this decision despite the 24-year-old player's deal originally running until the summer of 2028, as reported by the Noordhollands Dagblad this week.
The Eerste Divisie side currently sits tenth in the league table with six points from four matches. They have scored eleven goals and conceded five, giving them a goal difference of plus six. That puts them six points behind leaders Heracles. The next fixture is an away match against NAC Breda on December 6th, an opponent who themselves are in ninth place.
Why was the contract terminated?
Silvinho Esajas joined FC Volendam from ADO Den Haag in the winter of 2025. His time in the fishing village, however, did not go smoothly. The defender made eighteen official appearances for the first team, scoring once and providing one assist. He was rarely a regular starter and mostly served as a substitute. His last official minutes for FC Volendam came on January 15th of this year.
The club tried to sell Esajas to FC Emmen during the winter break, but that transfer fell through. After that, he was demoted to Jong FC Volendam, the reserve team. "FC Volendam waves goodbye to Silvinho Esajas with immediate effect." the club said. There was no longer any prospect of a return to manager Matthias Kohler's squad for him.
Which other player left?
The departing Esajas is not the only player to recently leave the club. Yannick Leliendal has also left FC Volendam behind. That midfielder was a much more established presence, playing 76 matches for the club. In those games, he managed three goals and eight assists. His departure and that of Esajas create space in the squad, which you can view on our squad page.
What led to the departure?
Beyond his limited playing time, more factors played a role in the decision to part ways with Esajas. Earlier this year, the defender was involved in a so-called 'passport gate' controversy. The exact details have not been made public, but it undoubtedly contributed to the view held by the club's management. The failed move to FC Emmen in the winter was the final chapter before the cooperation was definitively ended.
How is FC Volendam positioned now?
With Esajas and Leliendal gone, the club looks ahead. Recent form has been inconsistent with a pattern of win, loss, win, loss in the last four league games. The defence has performed well so far with just five goals conceded, which can be seen in the stats. The attack needs to become more consistent to close the gap on the leaders. The coming weeks are important, with an eye on the league table you can follow via our standings page.
FC Volendam's next assignment is an away match against NAC Breda on Sunday, December 6th. That team sits one place and one point higher in the table, making them a direct competitor in the mid-table of the Eerste Divisie.
