FC Volendam sign free-agent defender Jaïr Haakmat ahead of new season

FC Volendam have bolstered their defensive ranks with the signing of 22-year-old free-agent defender Jaïr Haakmat, who arrives from Sparta Rotterdam. The left-footed center-back has put pen to paper on a one-year contract with a club option for an additional season. The club currently sits 14th in the Eredivisie with 28 points from 30 games, a recent run of LDLLL form, while having scored 31 goals and conceded 50.

The central defender-who can also play at left-back-has already been training with the FC Volendam first team during pre-season preparations. Technical director Patrick Busby sees Haakmat as a valuable addition. "Haakmat has shown himself in a positive light in training and in friendlies. He’s a left-footed center-back who can also feature at left-back. He’s strong in duels, good in the air and brings attacking intent," Busby told the club’s official website.

Born in 2004, Haakmat came through Sparta Rotterdam’s youth system before moving to Italian side Lecce in 2022. A breakthrough never materialized in Italy, and last season he played in the Dutch second division. For Jong Sparta Rotterdam he made 18 appearances and scored once.

With Haakmat, FC Volendam are addressing a defensive weak spot. The club currently sits 14th in the Eredivisie with a goal difference of -19, having conceded 50 goals. The arrival of the experienced defender-who can slot in centrally or at left-back-adds depth to the defensive line. Busby stressed that Haakmat impressed during his trial with his physicality and technical ability.

For Haakmat, the move is a fresh start. After a disappointing spell in Italy, he returns to the Netherlands to prove himself in the top flight. His attacking instincts could also provide a surprise option on the left flank.

What’s next for FC Volendam?

Haakmat could make his competitive debut soon. On Friday the team face Eredivisie side FC Groningen at 14:00 in Gieten as part of their final pre-season friendlies. The club is gearing up for their next fixture, an away trip to NAC Breda on 6 December 2026. With Haakmat now in the fold, Volendam aim to tighten up defensively and strengthen their fight against relegation.
