FC Volendam suffered a 4-1 defeat at Jong AZ on Friday night, their fourth consecutive league loss. The result leaves Volendam stuck in 12th place in the Eerste Divisie, with nine points from seven matches.
Jong AZ took an early lead through Hessel de Wit and Jerolldino Armantrading made it 2-0 before halftime. After the break, Bendegúz Kovács and Julian Oerip extended the lead. Only Frederik Ihler could score for Volendam, assisted by top scorer Henk Veerman, who has eight goals this season.
Player Precious Ugwu reacted somberly after the match. "This one is going to sting for a while," said Ugwu. The team had just 180 travelling supporters in Wijdewormer.
This defeat follows previous losses to Jong PSV, MVV and FC Emmen. Their form over the last five games is mixed with two wins and three defeats. The next chance for redemption comes on Saturday 26 September when third-placed VVV Venlo visit. The full Volendam squad must prepare for that important fixture. The current standings show that points are needed quickly to avoid slipping further down the table.
