FC Volendam lost a friendly match 1-2 at home to Eerste Divisie side Telstar on Tuesday afternoon. A fine goal from Mohammed Belfqih in the 68th minute proved insufficient as the visitors turned the game around completely within ten minutes.
The first half passed without goals but not without incident. Kayden Wolff had the ball in the net within the first five minutes, but his effort was ruled out for offside. Serigne Deme had to leave the pitch injured in the 31st minute after a challenge with Fofin Turay and was replaced by Miguel Opoku. Just before halftime, Telstar had a big chance through Harrie Kuster, but his shot came back off the post and was cleared by Precious Ugwu.
Turnaround after opener
After the break, FC Volendam started unchanged, but manager Erwin van de Looi made five substitutions on the hour. The opening goal came from an individual moment. Belfqih received the ball on the edge of the box and curled it unstoppably into the top corner. The joy was short-lived. Two minutes later, a Telstar corner was not cleared far enough, and Nigel Ogidi Nwankwo hammered home the equaliser. In the 78th minute, Rojendro Oudsten dribbled forward from defence and slotted in the 1-2 winner.
FC Volendam fielded a total of nine academy graduates, including Ryan de Vries and Amadou Ba who came on late. The team, currently sitting 11th in the Eerste Divisie with 12 points from eight matches, faces a key official fixture next. On Saturday, they travel to face league leaders Almere City FC, who top the table after nine rounds with 21 points.
FC Volendam's starting lineup featured Roy Steur in goal. Daan Bisschops, Precious Ugwu, Nash Bijnoe and Jaïr Haakmat formed the defence. Nabil El Basri and Jesper Tielemans played in midfield, with Mohammed Belfqih as the attacking midfielder. Serigne Deme, Frederik Ihler and Kayden Wolff were the three forwards before Deme's injury. The substitutes were Miguel Opoku (31'), Enzo Pestana, Just Huisman and Mika van der Horst (all 61'), Amadou Ba (75') and Ryan de Vries (79').
